Two years ago, we launched the first generative AI copilot for lawyers. We thought it would be compelling, but we had no idea we’d soon have 2,500 legal teams onboard.
Last year, we launched the first AI contract review tool that marks up contracts for you. We thought it would be compelling, but we had no idea it would be used to review millions of contracts this year.
Generative AI keeps surprising us all. And I don’t think it’s done surprising yet.
It’s the first AI agent for lawyers. Like a junior colleague, you can delegate full multi-step projects to it. It will break the project down into a plan, execute it, and even adjust the plan if things go wrong.
It can work across multiple documents and data sources, revise Word documents, ask for help, and check its own work. These "agent" capabilities enable it to prepare full document sets from a term sheet, analyze datarooms for due diligence, and a lot more.
Starting today, Spellbook is beginning to onboard users onto Spellbook Associate on a first-come, first-serve basis. We'll be rolling out slowly and improving with our users' feedback over the next few months. You can sign up for early access here.
ChatGPT and the first wave of generative AI fundamentally changed what software was capable of. Although incredibly powerful, this wave was focused on producing a single response, often through a chat interface. One prompt, one response. AI Agents, however, see the bigger picture.
They execute multi-step projects off a single prompt, completing tasks across multiple documents and applications, manoeuvre around obstacles, and drive towards a goal like a human. All of these things together create a true "AI colleague" that "does work".
Spellbook Associate tackles some of the mind-numbing, time-consuming work traditionally reserved for new graduates. It’s the only legal AI product that can cross-reference and do detailed work across document sets.
With one prompt, Spellbook Associate can analyze a term sheet, understand the deal structure, and revise a set of precedents to get to a first draft of financing docs.
Associate can compile customized employment documents based on your client’s policies and the role.
Associate can review and extract information from documents to efficiently build disclosure schedule questionnaires or tempaltes.
Associate can review and cross-reference document sets to identify potential risks, flag inconsistencies, and suggest recommended fixes.
That’s only scratching the surface. We expect as we roll out, that we'll discover 100+ new use cases for AI in law that were not possible before. You can do a lot when you can break down arbitrary requests into a plan and execute.
What does this mean for human junior associates?
First off: Spellbook Associate doesn’t actually replace junior associates. We wanted to pick a provocative name for the product to really help people understand how agents are a world apart from something like ChatGPT. We are entering a new era of AI colleagues. But those colleagues are still limited in many ways compared to humans. Most importantly, they don't do the work that lawyers love like negotiating, building client relationships and advising on strategy.
But much of the drudgery of the junior associate role will disappear. And a single experienced lawyer will be able to handle larger projects on their own than they could before. AI tools will become a learning resource for new lawyers–teaching them on-the-fly as they’re working.
This is a good thing, because a huge number of junior associates are devastated at the reality of practice after they finish law school.
My co-founder, Daniel Di Maria, put it well:
“When I graduated from law school, I didn’t realize a large portion of the work I’d actually be doing as a lawyer would consist of splicing, pasting, and editing multiple Word documents. It wasn’t what I envisioned, and I don’t think it’s what lawyers are meant to do.”
Spellbook Associate lets lawyers delegate their most gruelling and monotonous work as they turn their attention to the high-value activities they envisioned themselves doing. It will also make them better lawyers, flagging things that they might have missed otherwise.
We predict that in the next five years, every lawyer, junior or senior, will work closely with their own AI associate.
Lawyers did not rack up student debt and spend years of their lives studying in order to spend 10 hours a day in Microsoft Word.
Today, Spellbook Associate is targeted at transactional lawyers in law firms and in-house teams. It can help small teams who have limited staff to help with monotony, and it can help larger teams working on complex, time-sensitive transactions.
In any case, it gives lawyers back more time to focus on the important stuff: Adding strategic value, negotiating, and growing relationships.
Spellbook also seamlessly integrates with Microsoft Word, fitting snugly into any lawyer’s existing workflow.
