AI won’t take over the legal profession. But lawyers who use it, such as those at KMSC, will.
“It’s given us a degree of efficiency we didn’t have before, and we were already pretty efficient.”
KMSC, one of Canada’s leading West Coast law firms, boasts an impressive legal team specializing in multiple practice areas. Their technology-minded partnership group quickly incorporated Spellbook into their daily work. KMSC lawyers consistently discover new ways Spellbook empowers them to work faster and smarter. For example, Spellbook:
And they’re just getting started.
“Spellbook probably helps me bill an extra hour a day. Maybe more.”
Justin Monahan, a mixed-practice lawyer at KMSC, had a tenant and landlord mutually agree to end a farm lease early. He simply put the lease into Word, opened Spellbook, and asked it to draft a termination agreement.
“It gave me the base document. After a few commands to fill in the gaps, the agreement was done,” Justin says. Without Spellbook, Justin would have had to draft the termination agreement from scratch.
“Using Spellbook probably saved me at least an hour, maybe more,” Justin says. “If it's a simple agreement you don't have a precedent for, Spellbook will save you a ton of time.”
When a client had a minor dispute with a dealership, Justin gave Spellbook their conversation notes and requested that it draft the appropriate letter to the dealership.
Justin says, “The letter just needed some tweaking, and it was good to send off. I really enjoy that purpose because I love writing, but good writing takes a long time and a lot of brainpower. Rather than spending 30 to 40 minutes on a letter, I can draft it using Spellbook in 10 or 12 minutes.”
“Good writing takes a long time and a lot of brainpower. Rather than spending 30 to 40 minutes on a letter, I can draft it using Spellbook in 10 to 12 minutes.”
For Todd Strang, a partner at KMSC, it’s about more than just efficiency. Spellbook also gives him extra confidence when drafting documents and reviewing contracts.
Spellbook recently assisted Todd in quickly — yet thoroughly — reviewing a 300-page franchise agreement. Traditionally, he would need to read through the entire document, searching for specific clauses and wording (e.g., cost, charge, fee) and potential franchisee breaches.
Instead, Spellbook swiftly identified each section that mentioned "cost charge fee" and other similar terms and highlighted those sections for Todd’s review. Because Spellbook can understand the legal context and implications beyond simple keyword matching, it also flagged sections that could constitute a breach by the franchisee.
But Spellbook didn’t stop there. It continued to speed up the review process by prompting Todd for expected clauses, giving Todd confidence that he hadn't missed anything important.
“If I turn that work product around with the same degree of quality five times faster, I’m making a lot more money.”
When Todd reviewed a family trust from a large accounting firm that made changes to a standard template, Spellbook boosted his confidence by confirming his thought process.
“They’d made references to certain sections of the Income Tax Act. I was fairly certain why they were there, but I just wanted to confirm,” Todd says.
He highlighted the references and asked Spellbook to explain their meaning — without telling Spellbook the references were from the Income Tax Act.
With Spellbook’s extensive knowledge, it automatically recognized the legislative act the references were under and confirmed which sections of the Income Tax Act were referenced. It then provided a plain English summary of what the references meant.
“I could have sent the summary to a client, and the client probably would have understood it. It was pretty neat,” Todd says.
“We push Spellbook to its limits, and I think we're getting maximum efficiency out of it.”
Justin is also impressed by Spellbook's ability to generate helpful summaries in litigation. With the correct prompts, Spellbook extracts key information and presents it clearly and concisely.
Justin explains, “In a personal injury case, I can ask Spellbook to summarize all the surgeries detailed in a report or all the injuries related to the left leg. The summaries help you wrap your brain around the file and give you relevant components to include in settlement proposals.”
He also uses Spellbook to maintain a list of summaries of litigation evidence, keeping his long-running cases organized.
Spellbook goes even further to examine the language in settlement proposals to help Justin better advocate for his clients. While Spellbook can't determine the ideal financial settlement figures, it can help reframe the proposal for a more persuasive client-focused approach.
Todd emphasizes how collaborative the KMSC team is and that it relies heavily on firm documents. KMSC lawyers prefer to use shared templates rather than keeping individual document silos ("Todd's documents" or “Justin’s documents”).
They modify document templates to suit each deal, but everyone benefits from greater efficiency from having a familiar starting point. Spellbook is central to this approach, promoting further collaboration, faster turnaround times, and consistent quality.
“From a team building, collaboration, efficiency, and client perspective, Spellbook is definitely very helpful.”
As Spellbook continually improves its features, the KMSC team will remain at the forefront of legal innovation, where its lawyers will be free to focus on developing creative solutions for their clients’ most complex challenges.
